We can sometimes have a feeling that life is against us, trying to thwart our plans for happiness, freedom and fulfilment which we have so carefully laid out in our mind. But the truth is that there is a greater plan, and it doesn’t involve us simply getting what we want, becoming successful in our chosen field, or finding someone (or a group of people) who will appreciate us and love us.
Life is an intelligent, conscious and loving force which wants to be fully manifested and embodied through you. It wants to fully occupy your heart, to restore full health and vitality to every cell of your body, and to illuminate your mind, like the Sun shining in a cloudless blue sky.
Often we think about life, talk about its purpose, speculate on its meaning, but the true essence of life is to be felt within, experientially rather than cerebrally. We need to enliven our body, to restore its vitality, feel the joy of being alive in our heart. This is when we know we are truly living.
All the myriad mental understandings, thoughts, opinions and beliefs that we invest our energy into do not bring us closer to life , they take us further into the abstracted conceptual world. There is no joy to be experienced there, no sense of connection or fulfilment. Just some superficial sense of satisfaction or security that we believe we know something. But this is not the kind of knowledge we truly need.
Our heart needs to know and feel experientially what our relationship is within this universe, and we can experience this as we allow our heart to become stronger, more open, more active. It is our sixth and most important sense, it is our radio receiver for a deeper message that comes from life, from the universe. It is how we feel the true depth and meaning of our life. We cannot know this conceptually, and although the hungry mind would like to comprehend everything, there are some things which are out if its range.
The fulfilment and depth that so many people seek – through consumerism, through material gratification, through the pursuit of success and notoriety, and even through relationships with others – is truly a spiritual depth. It is what fulfils the deepest part of us. It is what activates our heart, and lights up the entire circuitry of our mind and body. It is connection to that magnificent and transcendent beauty which is far greater than us, and far greater than anything we can understand, and it occurs through our heart.
This is why we feel so good in nature, in the elements, in the Sun, moving our bodies and breathing oxygen. We are feeding our heart with spiritual food, and it responds by becoming more active, more awake and sensitive. Nature is the greatest tool for remembering and feeling this deeper connection to life, and at some point we realise that the natural world is actually trying to wake us up. The birds sing their perfect harmonies to us, the winds blows away our cobwebs, the Sun restores warmth to the cold and dark parts of us which are in need of healing.
Truly, this world is on our side, not against us. It just knows what we need far better than we do. Its primary agenda is waking us up to the inspirational power which is supposed to be flowing through our heart; the divine electrical current which we call Love. All we have to do is snap out of our cosy bubble of physical comfort, entertainment and distraction, go outside, breathe deeply and say yes to Life…
“Develop the strength of your heart”
“We are but children, innocently longing to find our way back
to the world of joy, freedom and happiness we once knew..”
